Week 6, 2024 - Shades of the Past & Fantastic First Project Cars ...
Week 6: February 5 - February 11, 2024
Welcome Show Junkies
If you are anything like me you probably suffer from this syndrome.
The dreaded “I’ve got the desire, great intentions and ideas … but … too little free time, money or motivation”.
And with today’s go-go-go culture and all the chaos that comes with it it’s no surprise.
I’m right there with you.
The Shelby Cobra is outside the fun money budget so another option filled the desire.
A 1973 Mercedes Benz 450SL.
I figured a V8 powered car with power disc brakes that had been stored indoors for the past 20 years should get me on the road fairly quick.
That was almost 3 years ago.
In that time I managed to get the car running, driving and stopping so there has been some progress.
And now the tough part … do I dive into a complete restoration or replace tires and put it on the road.
Which brings me to this weeks topic of what is a good first project car.
An article on Hagerty’s site 5 Fantastic First Project Cars offers some good suggestions that may improve your chance of getting the car on the road quickly.
For those of us with driving or completed cars CONGRATULATIONS!
And for the lucky (smart) people that purchased a completed car KUDOS!
Finally for the rest of us working on it YOU CAN DO IT!
Here’s a suggestion, break the project down into small goals and tasks.
Each day, week or month set a goal to complete just 1 task.
A simple task like ordering specific parts, cutting out the rust or just making a patch panel.
Every completed task moves you 1 step closer.
My goal for this week is to make progress on the workshop with the installation of the entry door and maybe with the good weather I can tack on a some more siding.
Persistence is the key.
Good luck and thanks for joining.

I actually bought from a dealer in Louisville Kentucky. Site unseen. I knew I was taking a gamble, but it had the options I wanted, and it was in my budget. Looking back, I'm still happy with the Challenger. It's now almost done, and done correctly. Would I do this again? Yes. Life is short, you have to bet on yourself.
I thought I bought a finished car. Only to find out, the car was jumped, all of the plastic underbody was torn off. The nose cone was held on by zip ties. The breaks were pulling hard to the left. The rims, oh the rims. Not only bent, but one is welded. The driver seat was absolutely flat, no cushion at all. Last year was rebuilding the brakes, I had the seat redone, I'm 3 inches taller in the seat now. The suspension was rebuilt. Check engine light went off a couple of times, more repairs. I also deleted the mid mufflers. The car was in the shop more than I drove it. I still managed to show it a couple of times. This year, I made the decision to do a little motor work, and new rims. The motorwork is scheduled. Then, hopefully the rims, and also new tires, I might as well right? Then...it's done. Until...
